An old-school Deptford pie and mash shop opened in 1914 has been Grade-II listed.
Manze’s Pie and Mash Shop is run by George Mascall, a descendant of the early 20th-century Italian pie-making Manze family.
“It’s been there in the family for over 100 years so I’m not that surprised they’ve listed it,” he said.
“Inside, nothing’s changed. We’ve got all the marble tables, wooden benches and tiled walls – all the original stuff.”
The pie shop has been in George’s family for over a century – after his ancestors migrated to south London from Ravello, southern Italy, in 1878.
The family has since been serving up fluffy mashed potatoes and meat-filled piles dowsed in the obligatory liquor for generations.
Eels – a Cockney staple that was historically fished from the Thames and plonked onto dinner plates – are also on the menu.
The Deptford outlet has been listed thanks to its “characteristic shopfront and tiled interior, complete with benches, tables, terrazzo flooring, display counter and servers,” Historic England wrote.
Heritage officers also said the “rare and well-preserved” outlet represents “a distinct vernacular cuisine that formed a staple of working-class life in London”.
Set to retire in March 2025, Mr Mascall, 64, said: “Maybe the next owner will keep it as a pie and mash shop but I certainly won’t be involved.”
Asked if he’ll miss the work, George said: “A lot of customers will be upset and they reckon they’ll have a tear in my eye when the shutters go down.”
“I’m certainly looking forward to retirement,” he laughingly added.
George and his family are related to the owners of M. Manze Pie & Mash – also Manze descendants – who run shops in Peckham, Bermondsey and Sutton.
Manze pie shops in Islington, Peckham, Bermondsey and Walthamstow are already listed.
The Twentieth Century Society, which supported the Deptford branch’s listing, posted on X: “Manze’s Eel, Pie and Mash Shop in Deptford (1914) has just been Grade II listed, joining four other branches of the Manze family chain on the national register.
