This week’s front page story tells the story of a woman who has suffered over a decade of torment since being forcibly decanted from her Heygate Estate home.
Amele spent nine years living in a putrid Walworth flat and when the council finally moved her to Catford while they fixed the house, she says he was erroneously evicted from her Catford flat too. This dignified woman was then subjected to the shocking indignity of spending nights in McDonald’s.
This was totally avoidable. When the council said it would force her to move out of the Heygate into the Walworth flat, she warned them it was filthy. They didn’t listen. Back in December 2019, Elephant Park, the development where Amelia’s home once stood, was transformed into “a mini-winter wonderland”. Amele spent that same winter sheltering from the cold in the Old Kent Road McDonald’s, trembling hands clasped round a paper cup of coffee. For her, that winter was no wonderland.
