Fisher FC played their first match back home last weekend after twelve years in Dulwich, thrashing Farnborough OBG 4-0.
More than 100 fans turned out to support the team and see the new stadium on Salter Road, Rotherhithe, chanting “we’re back in Bermondsey” and debating what each side of the pitch should be called.
The brand new stadium, which features a 3G pitch and clubhouse, only experienced a minor teething issue when the turnstile’s key was misplaced.
Dan Feeney, a Fisher FC Board Member, said: “It’s difficult to put into words, it’s an amazing feeling to see football back in the area. People have worked really hard and a lot of people really care about Fisher.
“Everyone connected with the club is happy that we have finally managed it – we are finally home! To see eleven people in Fisher kit on the pitch, to see people finally here is a really good feeling.”
Joe Arif, a community member, said: “I’ve been with the club for 30 years. My uncle used to be a manager! I don’t think them being back has quite sunk in yet. I keep feeling we are playing away.
“I’ve been waiting twelve years for this and I never thought it would happen. To see it is just unbelievable. I just hope the community will enjoy it and get involved.
“We have put our pride and soul into it but the battle isn’t over. As a club we are getting back on our feet. We are only as strong as our membership.”
Fisher’s return comes after twelve years of sharing a ground with Dulwich Hamlet FC at Champion Hill, while waiting for Southwark Council to build them a new home.
The News has previously reported on Fisher’s journey back to Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, as there was controversy surrounding the tender process for who will manage the new stadium, as well as the stadium’s security after vandals broke in.
With the risk of becoming tenants at their new ground if they do not receive the contract, Fisher’s future sustainability remains in question. A decision by the council on the tender process is expected at the end of August.
