Two friends are set to start work on transforming The Beehive pub in Elephant and Castle into The Spit and Sawdust, writes Thomas Deacon…
Matthew Smyth, 36, and Andrew McGuigan, 37, moved in together in London around four and a half years ago, and had always talked about setting up a pub. Once the pub has undergone some renovation work, the pair hope it will become a part of the community.
Matthew said: “I spent last weekend knocking on doors introducing myself to people and the reaction was great. We’re both excited and nervous. We can’t wait to get our teeth stuck into it.”
The site has been home to a pub since 1856, and it even survived two bombing raids during WW2.
If all goes to plan the opening weekend is set for Friday September 9, with a free BBQ all weekend and a host of DJs.
