Theatre enthusiasts are invited to peek behind the curtain this April with a free, pre-release showing of a production called ‘Oh Mother’, writes Herbie Russell…
The show will later run at The Soho and Tobacco Factory Theatres, but not before Southwark gets a sneak preview at Longfield Hall, Knatchbull Road, Camberwell.
RashDash, the arts company behind the show, have been rehearsing at the Victorian community hall and are ready to share their work-in-progress.
Describing the production as “a fever dream made in the heat of love”, RashDash will blend live music, movement and play to “create a bold and unforgettable performance”. They said: “It’s for our friends, our mothers, our partners, our babies and for any of you that are making a family. It is relentless, diabolical, wonderful, hilarious.”
The public rehearsal will take place on Friday 29 April at 3.30pm. RashDash are also hosting a free theatre workshop for adults on Tuesday 19 April at 1.45pm.
‘Oh Mother’ is one of several events hosted at Longfield Hall this summer.
There will also be a classical music concert, contemporary dance exploring “the taboo of adolescence”, and an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ adaptation.
Longfield Hall is a Victorian-era community hall that regularly holds events such as martial arts training, yoga and dance.
Built in 1891 by William Minet, a Huegenot philanthropist, the building survived the Blitz and, in the 1970s, hosted Britain’s first publicly funded black theatre, the Dark & Light Theatre Club.
