Join artistic duo Baum & Leahy for two evenings of sensory ceremonies and time travels diving into the cellular biology of your own body.
Baum & Leahy’s new artwork Sensory Cellumonials is a responsive shrine composed of five portals accessed through each of your senses. Each portal uses sensory ceremonies to explore future worlds transformed by our understanding of cellular biology. The portals will open one at a time during the first five days of the One Cell At A Time online exhibition.
Will this intimate encounter with your vibrant trillion-cell body affect how you view the world within and around you?

About the artwork:
Sensory Cellumonials is produced by Justine Boussard and was commissioned by One Cell At A Time, a public engagement project for the Human Cell Atlas scientific research initiative.
The online artwork is being exhibited as part of the One Cell At A Time exhibition www.onecellatatime.org running from 29 October to 30 November 2021.
Sensory Cellumonials by Baum & Leahy is a ceremonial gathering point between our cells and ourselves.
The experience invites you to tune into and sense the cellular biology of your own body, and respond to different possible futures of cellular biology.
Through an inner-worldly landscape, you dive into the potentiality of your cellular body, in moments where awareness and sensations align to open up new directions. Travelling through one of five portals, a sensory ceremony sets the scene for a future scenario in a world transformed by our understanding of cellular biology. After each time travelling ritual you are invited to share your response to or expansion of the scenario, or write entirely new stories of futures yet to be imagined.
Sensory Cellumonials welcomes the personal and philosophical questions that arise as our bodies become data in a collective digital ecosystem. Through intuitive and sensorial embodiment the project aims to nurture a sense of wonder and enchantment in dialogue with new scientific and technological developments.
The Human Cell Atlas is aiming to map every cell type in the human body. The One Cell At A Time exhibition explores the science of the HCA, as well as public attitudes to body, tissue and data donation for research, through art and creative learning.
Baum & Leahy is an award-winning creative duo who collaborate with scientists to open up, question and sensorialise scientific research into tactile, participatory experiences and installations.
