A teacher from Peckham’s Angel Oak Academy was one of a 100-strong group of teachers invited to a special reception at No.10 Downing Street on Monday, May 22.
The evening event, held by Theresa May and Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds, saw teachers from across the country recognised for their achievements, with the PM telling the audience: “We know that the success of every young person, in whatever they go on to do in life, is shaped by the education they receive at school.”
Mrs May went on to say that since 2010, teacher numbers are at record levels and more than two million children are being taught in schools that are rated ‘good’, or ‘outstanding’, by Ofsted.
“Teachers are key to making Britain the great meritocracy it can and should be,” she said, and I am committed to working with them so that every child has the best possible start in life.”
Ms Charlotte MacKechnie represented Angel Oak Academy, which was rated ‘outstanding’ in last year’s Ofsted report. In particular, Ms MacKechnie has helped lead the school’s work in phonics, a technique to help children with their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
