Southwark schoolkids have taken part in a citywide art project to track and explore children’s moods in coronavirus lockdown.
Students at Redriff Primary School, Galleywall Primary School and City of London Academy Southwark drew their own versions of internet memes with their teachers. Artist Stuart Batchelor helped them turn this into online drawings and created from these an online patchwork of digital art describing the range of children’s moods.
The art, which came online on Wednesday, has been timed to coincide with “mental health awareness week”, which is this week. Students from years 1-12 took part, from ten schools across London.
“We felt it was important that children developed the vocabulary to be able to share and understand their emotions at this time, as well as having the opportunity to explore this creatively,” said Emma Fell, art coordinator at Redriff Primary School. in Rotherhithe.
“The children’s work speaks volumes about the range of emotions they have been through during the pandemic, and it really is a testament to how resilient they have been.”
