The Save Southwark Woods campaign put down more roots at the Nunhead Cemetery Open Day at the weekend, pushing the total number of signatures on their petition to 7,000.
The grass roots campaign is opposing Southwark Council’s plans to redevelop areas of woodland and green spaces within the borough’s cemeteries to use as additional graveyards.
The group is aiming to gather ten thousand supporters before they submit their petition to a council meeting on July 8.
Cllr Darren Merrill, cabinet member for Environment and Public Realm, told the News previously that the council needs to create thousands of new grave spaces so burial can remain an option for Southwark residents.
On Bank Holiday Monday there is a Save the Cemetrees event in Camberwell Old Cemetery from 11am till 1pm.
Thanks Amelia – unfortunately the 4800+ new sterile burial plots will not be sold to all Southwark residents as none are suitable for orthodox Muslim or Jewish Burial, even though Southwark says on their website they cater for all demand. Tower Hamlets council has bought land at purpose made Kemnal Park Cemetery 4 miles away for just this purpose – multifaith burials are an option here for Southwark too. Woodlands are valuable to all residents of Southwark – for emotional, physical and mental benefit, as well as air pollution and recreation.
