Maddock Way surgery could be saved from closure after rumours another GP practice is pitching to take over.

As this paper has reported, news the Brandon Estate’s GP surgery on Maddock Way will not remain open after the retirement of its sole doctor in May of this year has left patients outraged.

A campaign to save it, led by its receptionist, who set up a petition signed by more than a thousand, and local MPs and councillors, culminated in a packed public meeting before Christmas.

A specific point of contention is that no other surgeries had been offered the opportunity to take over, and no active procurement was taking place, as it was believed to be too small a surgery to be financially viable.

But the News understands another GP practice has now expressed interest in taking over and will be pitching its business case at a meeting next Tuesday, January 28.

Sources say this is likely to get the green-light.

“As is normal practice, the CCG’s Primary Care Commissioning Committee (PCCC) decision to ask patients to register at another local practice, following the closure of Maddock Way Surgery, was pending engagement with local people and stakeholders.

“A report on this feedback will be reviewed at the next committee meeting on 28 January including any further proposal presented to the committee for decision,” a CCG spokesperson said in response to a request to comment.
