St Christopher’s Hospice in Sydenham has been rated ‘outstanding’ by regulator the Care Quality Commission.
The charity, founded by Dame Cicely Sanders more than fifty years ago, was described by inspectors as somewhere ‘where staff were willing to go the extra mile’ for patients.
The full report was published in March after visits were held throughout two days in December 2019.
Director of care, Amanda Mayo, said: ‘We are absolutely thrilled that the dedication, expertise, and enthusiasm of all our staff has been recognised in this CQC report.
“All our team, from IT support, to stewards, physios, nurses and doctors, share an absolute goal of offering the best possible care and support for people who are dying, and their friends and families, in Southwark and across south-east London.
“Compassion and kindness are, after all, what we would all wish for those closest to us, at the end of life.’
Its work providing tailored palliative care was particularly praised, including a project in Croydon to support homeless people at the end of their lives.
