Wide-ranging plans to expand the Evelina Children’s Hospital have been announced today, including a new extension and a dedicated day surgery.

The Trust which runs the hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’, says the ambition is to be able to treat more of the sickest children with state-of-the-art facilities.

Among the proposals are a dedicated children’s day surgery centre adjacent to the existing children’s hospital, next to the existing hospital.

This would open in 2022, to increase capacity for complex surgeries. An extension on the main hospital itself is also planned so that the Trust is able to provide services from the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Meanwhile, children’s outpatient services would be transferred to a new building on Royal Street, to maximise space for inpatients at the hospital.

The Trust’s top boss, Dr Ian Abbs, said the proposals would “create one of the leading comprehensive children’s hospitals in Europe.”

The hospital’s director, Marian Ridley, said the expansion was needed to cope with ever-increasing patient numbers and more complicated cases.

“These developments will ensure we meet their needs now and in the future as the number of patients needing the specialist care and expertise that our teams provide continues to increase,” she said.

The day surgery centre will be constructed by Morgan Sindall, while Linkcity have been named the preferred developer for the expansion of the main hospital site.
