Builders have finished the job on the new £160 million Guy’s Hospital Cancer Centre, where new patients will be welcome from autumn.
Construction on the fourteen-storey tower, located on the corner of Snowsfields and Great Maze Pond, officially finished on Monday, nearly three years to the day since demolition began.
The next phase of the project will see the centre kitted out with Europe’s first above-ground radiotherapy machines, as well as six linear accelerators.
The centre will bring together as many possible types of cancer treatment all under one roof, as Guy’s Hospital’s treatment centres are currently dotted across thirteen buildings.
Dr Majid Kazmi, Clinical Director of Cancer Services at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “It is fantastic to reach this point with the new building.
“There is still a great deal of work to be done to prepare for opening to patients but we have a great team working on this and our staff are getting excited about moving in.”
Of the mountain of cash spent on multi-million-pound project, £25 million was donated by local charities, another £15 million came from further fundraising.
