A £60,000 multi-use games area on the Kingswood Estate was unveiled last Thursday after the estate’s youth club came up with the idea.
MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, Helen Hayes, officially opened the games area which is marked out for football and basketball and is free to use.
Members of the estate’s youth club went to the tenants and residents association who supported the idea, and were awarded funding by their ward councillors through the Dulwich Community Council.
The Veolia Environmental Trust provided a grant of £38,020 and Southwark Council contributed £21,681.
Chair of Kingswood Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association’s sub-committee for the games area, Douglas Snelling said: “I want to thank the members of the sub-committee for all the input, hard work and advice they have given to this project.
“Without it, the MUGA [Multi Use Game Area], or the ‘kickabout area’ as it is now known, would not be here today.”
The Kingswood Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association led the project over several years, with the support of councillors and the Veolia Environmental Trust.
The Veolia grant was made through the Landfill Communities Fund.
