East Street Library will be refurbished using £300,000 of local government funding before it relocates to the Aylesbury Estate in 2020.
Works to improve the library, at the junction of Old Kent Road, will begin in August, and include new lighting, better signage and a new ‘enterprise pod’.
Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for business, culture and social regeneration, said: “The revamp will help tide the current library service over until its new and improved home on the Aylesbury estate is ready, and means the building will be ready to offer the Old Kent Road a new service as an affordable and flexible business and meeting space for local people in this key area.”
The idea for the project came from locals who responded to a ‘What Walworth Wants’ consultation in 2016.
There will be a drop-in session at the library on February 13 from 5.30pm to 7pm for residents to see the plans. The library will stay open during the works, which will take two to three months.
