Southwark College was visited by one of London’s deputy mayors as part of Love Our Colleges week, writes Josh Mellor…
Deputy Mayor of planning, regeneration and skills, Jules Pipe, dropped into creative arts classes, Shakespeare rehearsals, and chatted to students this week.
He toured the campus with principal Annette Cast as part of the week’s promotion of the importance of colleges in providing skills and driving social mobility.
Mr Pipe said: “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting staff and students at Southwark College.
“The Mayor and I are determined to ensure that we have a skills system that meets the needs of Londoners, so it is always good to meet young people who are passionate about learning and maximising their potential.”
The campaign says it is unsustainable that many colleges providing essential education have experienced a 30 per cent funding cut, resulting in fewer hours of teaching and support for young people.
The college’s principal Annette said: “We were delighted to host Jules today; he was really keen to see the college at work.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to highlight the great facilities and raw talent that we have at the college.”
