Southwark Council is putting on an online event for people who want to learn more about how they can help refugees from Ukraine and elsewhere in the borough.
The Southwark Stands with Refugees event on the evening of next Tuesday (March 22) will give people a chance to learn more about the Ukrainian refugee crisis, as well as the broader situation with refugees in Southwark – and how residents can help.
Councillor Alice Macdonald, Southwark’s cabinet member for equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure, said “Southwark has a long and proud history of welcoming and supporting refugees and asylum seekers seeking safety and sanctuary. The current war in Ukraine has led to the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.
“It is essential that we come together as a community to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian refugees over the coming weeks and months. Alongside this growing crisis, it is also important to provide support and assistance to other refugees and asylum seekers who have been forced to leave their homes and seek sanctuary in our borough.”
The national government has called on British residents to give up a home or spare room for at least six months to Ukrainian people or families fleeing the war in their homeland.
Anyone in Southwark who wants to to register for the Homes for Ukraine scheme, if they know someone they want to support, can visit the government website.
If they do not have a named person or wish to support in other ways, organisations like the Sanctuary Foundation and Ukraine Now are collecting expressions of interest.
