Residents and businesses concerned about the changing Old Kent Road are crowdfunding for a communal space where people can come together to ‘demystify’ planning and regeneration.
Old Kent Road is set to be regenerated as part of Southwark Council’s ‘Area Action Plan’.
Proposals include 20,000 new homes, the Bakerloo Line Extension and a mix of cultural, business and leisure spaces including joined up green areas for commuters to walk and cycle to work.
Community group Action OKR is crowdfunding for an ‘Urban Room’ to hold events, exhibitions, talks, film screenings and workshops but – most importantly – it will also be used to house what the group says will be ‘easy-to-understand models and up-to-date plans for the area, with people on hand to explain and help demystify the planning process’.
The group has now launched a crowdfunder: www.spacehive.com/urban-room-old-kentroad
