Repairs to Bermondsey Tube Station’s sorry-looking sign have been delayed because Transport for London (TfL) can’t source the glass.
In May 2022, a lorry reversed into the station’s frontage damaging the sign so it only reads ‘Station’ instead of ‘Bermondsey Station’.
In October, TfL told a local councillor the new sign would be delivered “during December”.
Bermondsey Station sign could be fixed in time for Christmas
But local politicians have now been told the sign probably won’t be delivered until February.
On Tuesday, January 10, North Bermondsey Councillor Rachel Bentley received an email from TfL saying: “We had hoped to deliver the sign in December, and all the fixings are ready for the sign to be refitted.
“Unfortunately, our contractor has had some difficulties sourcing the glass that is specified for this type of signage.
“However, we have now found a manufacturer able to deliver the sign to our specifications and the timeframe for delivery is 3-4 weeks.”
The Liberal Democrat councillor has been chasing TfL for months over the sign. She previously said: “We can’t help but feel that the sign’s disrepair is emblematic of TfL’s struggles and the sorry state of public assets more broadly.”
The incident which damaged the sign in May was described as a “slow-speed collision”. There were no injuries.
The sign has a habit of running into trouble. In 2021, a bus smashed into it while avoiding an oncoming ambulance.
The 47 bus rolled onto the pavement and hit the sign at 6.30pm on Tuesday, August 17, cracking windows on the upper deck.
