Tower Bridge was stuck open for over an hour this afternoon after a ‘mechanical fault’.
Traffic came to a standstill as engineers battled to fix the problem.
The bridge had become locked in an uneven position after letting a ship through earlier today.
It has now reopened to pedestrians but remains closed to traffic.
Motorists advised to avoid the area, with huge tailbacks reported across central London.
