Tributes have continued to come in for Mary O’Leary, the “kind and good-hearted” great-grandmother who was crushed by a lorry in Peckham High Street on Friday September 4.
The 76-year-old was out doing her shopping when the collision happened as she crossed the road towards the top of Rye Lane.
Southwark Travellers’ Action Group (STAG) have this week paid tribute to an “independent lady” whose loss has been felt across the Traveller community in Peckham.
Kathleen Ryan, of STAG, who knew Mary for fifteen years, described the news of her death as “an awful shock”
“She was good natured, quiet but always lovely to talk to and very friendly,” said Kathleen, who misses seeing Mary at her gate at home in Brideale Close, where the great-grandmother of fifteen lived for more than 30 years.
Mary’s brother Timothy told the News last week that her death “took my heart”.
“She was the only sister we had and she is dearly missed.”
Mourners are invited to pay their respects to Mary as she will be laying in rest at F A Albin & Sons chapel on Tuesday September 29 from 1.30 to 4.30pm. In traditional Irish style, Mary’s coffin will then be taken to St James the Great chapel in Elm Grove, Peckham, for a 6pm mass. The following day a funeral mass for Mary will be held at 11am at St James the Great before the cortege proceeds to Camberwell Old Cemetery.
The family welcomes anyone who knew Mary to come to the church and the viewing.
