IBRAHIM KARGBO scored a stunning volley to rescue a point for Dulwich Hamlet against Jimmy Bullard’s Leatherhead on Tuesday night. With three fixtures in six days, Hamlet boss Gavin Rose made two changes to the side that lost to Havant & Waterlooville at the weekend.
Gavin Tomlin and Sanchez Ming dropped to the bench and Dumebi Dumaka and Nyren Clunis started. Dulwich had the ball in the net in the ninth minute when Dumaka crossed from the right, but Ibra Sekajja was offside. It was scoreless at half-time even though Leatherhead continued to look dangerous on the break, but Preston Edwards was relatively untroubled in goal. That all changed with 20 minutes left.
There seemed little danger when Matt Drage brought the ball out of defence before he saw his pass forward charged down by Tanners substitute Nana Boakye-Yiadom. The attacker then beat Drage to the loose ball before advancing into the penalty area and finishing past Edwards. Tomlin saw one effort blocked and fired another wide as Leatherhead continued to frustrate Rose’s side. With time running out, Dulwich forced a corner that Tomlin delivered into the penalty area.
It was cleared to the edge of the box where Kargbo was waiting and he met it flush first-time, striking a fierce rising volley that crashed off the crossbar and over the line to rescue a valuable point for his side. It was a good response after the disappointment last weekend. Dulwich took the lead against Havant & Waterlooville through a brilliant Sekajja goal, the attacker finishing from an almost impossible angle with a sublimely powerful and accurate shot from Ashley Carew’s pass into the inside-left channel.
The home side were level three minutes after the break, Theo Lewis looping a header from a free-kick past goalkeeper Edwards. The game appeared to be heading for a draw, but with five minutes remaining substitute George Barker cut in from the Dulwich left. Nathan Green jostled him and was harshly adjudged to have pulled him back, before Jason Prior stepped up and beat Edwards from the penalty spot.
