Morrisons supermarket donated £1,000 to the burgled Peckham food bank on Friday – the same day the Royal Family dipped into their pockets.
The store on Rye Lane was visited by Miatta Fahbulleh, MP for Peckham, who thanked employees and picked out products for an emergency hamper being sent to the food bank.
Brandon Moorhouse, People Manager at Morrisons said: “We were sorry to hear about the break-in at Southwark food bank and were very keen to make a donation and support our local community.
“Our customers have also been kindly donating goods all week which we have delivered today.”
The Rye Lane Morrisons is just a five-minute walk from the Southwark Food Bank, which was ransacked by thieves on Sunday night (September 8).
Footage showed the suspects forcing open the shutters before going ’back and forth’ for hours – taking any stock they could get their hands on.
The charity distributes hundreds of parcels containing food and hygiene products, leaving volunteers “disheartened” and “ready to quit”.
After the News broke the story, the food bank received an outpouring of support with hundreds visiting the GoFundMe page.
Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, have donated £3,500 to help replenish the stock.
Pecan chief executive Peter Edwards took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank the Royal couple saying ‘Food stocks are being replenished now”.
Peter Edwards told the BBC: “This surprise donation by the Prince and Princess of Wales – following such a difficult spell for their family – underlines their kindness and decency.
“After serious ill health, their first thought was of how to help others.”
