A group of Tibetan monks will be taking part in sacred tradition this week at Oxo Gallery on South Bank and visitors are encouraged drop by and watch.
A free-to-attend live sand mandala installation will take place at Oxo Gallery from Wednesday 17 – Sunday 21 June to celebrate the Buddhist Film Festival.
A group of Tibetan monks will spend five days creating an intricate work of ‘sacred geometry’ before destroying it in a ‘ceremonial dissolution’ on the final day.
Mandala installations are a centuries-old tradition where monks use colours sand to build the patterns gradually by hand. They are destroyed afterwards, highlighting the Buddhist custom of the impermanence of life.

The free installation will celebrate the launch of the Buddhist Film Festival, which features a programme of short and feature films exploring Buddhist philosophy.
The festival will run online and in person over two weeks from 16 June. Visitors to the Oxo Gallery will also receive a code granting free access to the full festival film programme.
Bruno Wang, co-curator of the Buddhist Film Festival and founder of the Pure Land Foundation, said: “The sand mandala is a beautiful reminder that value does not come from permanence. For five days, visitors will watch something extraordinary emerge through patience, attention and care, only for it to disappear again.”
