Roll down to Terry’s Cafe this afternoon (Friday, November 18) for a cockney knees-up and raucous singalong to celebrate the 40th anniversary of an iconic Borough institution.
Tom Carradine, renowned pantomime and cabaret star, will lead proceedings at 156 – 158 Great Suffolk Street from 3pm till 5.30pm.
Cafe owner, Austin Yardley, who celebrated his 44th birthday yesterday, is inviting people to enjoy “a bit of old-school community”.
Hostesse-with-the-mostest Austin, who has worked at his family businesses since he was fourteen, said: “It’s an opportunity to being a bit of old school community together. There’ll be classic songs like ‘Roll out the barrel’, ‘Lovely bunch of coconuts’ but modern ones as well which everyone can join in with!”
Established in 1982 by Austin’s father, Bermondsey-boy Terry Yardley, Terry’s Cafe has been serving punters ‘sticky toffees’ and ‘cups of Rosie’ ever since.
The award-winning cafe is known for its delicious fry-ups, classic interior decor, and positive promotion of quintessentially British culture.
It’s not the first time stardom has graced its tablecloths. In 2015, Countdown host Rachel Riley did a waitressing shift as part of ‘Small Business Saturday’.
There will also be a Christmas Special event on December 2 from 3pm. Terry’s Cafe is at 158 Great Suffolk St, Borough, SE1 1PE.
