Campaigners say they have submitted what they believe is a “competitive bid” to buy Brixton Village and Market Row after a huge public rally last week.
Hundreds gathered on Station Road in Brixton on Friday evening last week to hear from traders, residents, campaign groups and politicians backing the Buy Back Brixton campaign, which aims to bring the historic markets into community ownership.
Organisers say they submitted the bid before Monday’s 5pm deadline, after raising over £550,000 through a GoFundMe appeal and attracting more than 36,000 signatures to an online petition.
Campaigners claim international investors want to buy Brixton Village and Market Row for around £50 million from current owners TPG Angelo Gordon and Hondo Enterprises.
Brixton youth charity The Advocacy Academy was reportedly working closely with Brixton Traders and Community Association initially to help traders secure better leases and improve conditions before working towards community ownership of the market.
Campaigners say plans were accelerated after they were told other buyers were interested in the site and prospective bidders had until Monday, June 22, to demonstrate they had enough money to progress.
Brixton Village originally went up for sale in September 2024, and a month later, traders said they were ‘not told’ about the market going up for sale‘.
In a statement, earlier this week campaign organisers said: “We can confirm that this afternoon, before the 17:00 deadline, the Buy Back Brixton campaign, with the support of a number of funders, successfully submitted a bid we believe to be competitive for the purchase of Brixton Village and Market Row.”
“The current owners will now need some time to assess the bids they have received before letting us know which bids they choose to shortlist.”
The new Green leader of Lambeth Council, Martin Abrams, attended the rally and said: “As the new council in Lambeth, we are the community and we have your backs.
“Because Brixton Village and Market Row are not just another piece of property on the capitalist monopoly board.
“It is where generations of people have built businesses, created jobs, shared food, made music, celebrated their heritage and built community.”
