Notoriously dangerous for cyclists, Lambeth Bridge has undergone major safety works, writes Cristina Lia Trujillo…

TfL has carried out waterproofing and urgent repairs on Lambeth Bridge to make it safer and more durable.

According to its own data, Lambeth Bridge’s northern junction was London’s most dangerous for cyclists from 2019 to 2021.

The improvements, which include protected footway-level cycle lanes, aim to make the bridge safer and more accessible for everyone.

The northern and southern roundabouts have been improved on the Grade II Listed structure.

TfL head of programme delivery, Julie Lewington, said: “I am delighted that work on Lambeth Bridge has been completed.

“We are committed to vision zero, the Mayor’s goal to eliminate death and serious injury from the transport network, and these changes play a vital role in reducing danger at this key junction.”

TfL has installed signal-controlled junctions at either end of Lambeth Bridge, replacing the roundabouts.

The new cycle lanes on the bridge have been joined by new signalised pedestrian crossings to bolster pedestrian safety.

London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, said: “I’m delighted safety improvements at Lambeth Bridge North are now complete – making the area safer and easier for people walking, cycling and driving every day.”

Bridge deck repairs were carried out and temporary security measures have been made permanent, while attempts were made to preserve the bridge’s heritage.

Lambeth bridge shut periodically in 2025 during the improvements.

Snagging work, including minor repairs to the ironwork paint, will take place over the coming months.

Lewington continued: “Schemes like this are crucial to tackling locations with a history of collisions and ensuring London’s streets are safer for all.

“We’d like to thank Londoners for their patience while this work was taking place.”

The work occurred as part of TfL’s safer junction programme, launched to improve road safety in high-traffic parts of London.

John Coombes, contract director at Tarmac Kier Joint Venture (TKJV), said: “We’re proud to have played a part in creating a positive legacy at Lambeth Bridge.

“We look forward to seeing the impact these improvements will have on the community and everyone who uses this key Thames crossing for years to come.”

Cyclists were involved in 22 of the 31 collisions at Lambeth Bridge’s roundabouts between September 1, 2021, and August 31, 2024.

There was also a fatal cycle collision in 2015 on the bridge.
