Southwark housing campaigner and anti-lockdown protestor Piers Corbyn has been arrested in connection with a video that appeared to encourage people to burn down MPs’ offices.
The arrest, on suspicion of encouragement to commit arson, took place in Southwark at around 1.45am on Sunday. It followed an anti-vaccine protest in Westminster, where Mr. Corbyn addressed the crowd.
Walworth resident Mr Corbyn, brother of former Labour leader Jeremy, has long been a critic of Covid-19 restrictions and vaccines. A video appears to show him criticising MPs who voted for fresh Covid restrictions as “scum who have decided to vote for the new fascism”, and applauding rebels who voted against new restrictions.
Referring to those who voted in favour, Corbyn then appears to say: “You’ve got to get a list of them … and if your MP is one of them, go to their offices and, well, I would recommend burning them down, OK. But I can’t say that on air. I hope we’re not on air.”
He has now been released pending further investigation.
The news comes not long after MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes told the News that she believed death-threats against MPs to be a “near-universal experience,” following the murder of MP Sir David Amess.
The News attempted to contact Mr Corbyn for comment.
