A memorial service is to be held on June 23 for Major Denise Capstick, the former nurse, mayor of Southwark and Bermondsey councillor who died earlier this year aged just 56.
The service will be at Southwark Cathedral from 3pm-4pm on what would have been Denise’s 57th birthday. The service will be followed by tea. Everyone who would like to come is welcome. Organisers have asked attendees to arrive by 2.45pm.
Denise, a former nursing matron at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and an army major who served in Iraq, died of a brain tumour in February after being diagnosed in 2019.
She had also been Liberal Democrat councillor for the Bricklayers and Grange wards from 1998 to 2014, mayor of Southwark from 2002-2003, and Southwark Council cabinet member for health and social care from 2006-2007.
Many people whom Denise had helped over her long career of service to others paid tribute to her in the wake of her death.
