MILLWALL have moved on to other targets after missing out on Ben Marshall – but Neil Harris warned they must be the right fit for the club.
The Lions had bid what would have been a club record outlay for Marshall, but the winger opted to join Championship rivals Norwich City instead.
Harris wants to sign a left-sided attacker, but stressed there won’t be a host of incomings this summer.
“You have targets, sometimes you have a number one target and sometimes you might have three player targets for one position and you try to manoeuvre your way into position for those options,” Harris said.
“We don’t need to add many players this summer. If players come available to make us better then that will be a consideration.
“After last year everyone will have an opinion on what can make us better. I’m sure every fan if you told you could sign Messi, Ronaldo, Harry Kane they’d say, ‘yes we’ll have them all and play them up front’. Well you can only have a certain amount of players on the pitch and it is my job to make sure we get the right blend, the right personalities that get the characteristics of the club, and the right squad size.
“I’ll only bring players in that I feel can benefit us.”
Meanwhile, Harris was philosophical after seeing Marsahll join the Canaries.
“I was very consistent in saying that Marshall was a player we valued highly. He had an exceptional spell with us so naturally we showed an interest in taking him permanently,” he said.
“However, when you’ve got big clubs that have a lot more financial clout than us at present because of money they have recouped from player sales, then it makes it very difficult to compete.
“That is just the reality of it, that’s the position we’re in and we can’t change it because of Financial Fair Play. We know we’re in a really good place but we have to live within our means. Some clubs don’t.
“We see year after year that some clubs don’t and fall short, and when they fall short the book should be thrown at them. We won’t break those rules and put our club in danger.
“The chairman has been hugely supportive but this is one case where we have to hold our hands up and say we’re not ready to compete in those circles at the moment.”
