The giant charity giving box at Surrey Quays shopping centre is here to stay indefinitely.
The giving box, which is found outside Poundland on the ground floor of the centre, was originally installed for Christmas and has raised £1,629 for four local charities.
The charities are Surrey Docks Farm, a community farm and educational charity by the river, Southwark Young Carers (Imago), a support service for young carers in the borough, The Mayor of Southwark’s Common Good Trust, a charity that provides support for anyone in need in Southwark and Time & Talents, a community charity and centre based in Rotherhithe.
Visitors can use contactless payments to give £1, £3 or £5 to the charities.
Ian Moore, centre manager at Surrey Quays said: “Our community really got behind the giving box at Christmas, and so we’re thrilled to announce that shoppers are able to continue supporting our four charity partners, Surrey Docks Farm, Southwark Young Carers (Imago), The Mayor of Southwark’s Common Good Trust and Time & Talents quickly and safely when they come to visit.
“Donations are vital in ensuring the teams at our chosen charities continue the work they do in the local area, and so we’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our visitors for their support.”
