Community groups are raising money for another mural in Camberwell, to go outside the Piano Factory flats, writes Kit Heren…
The mural, which a mock-up shows could be a keyboard, would welcome people to the area as they came from neighbouring Peckham along the Peckham Road.
Local artist Lionel Stanhope is in line to do the painting. Stanhope has done several murals across Southwark and elsewhere in south London, including a painting for Millwall outside the club’s stadium the Den last year.
The fundraiser is at £815 at the time of writing, £35 short of its £850 target with three weeks left. A representative of organisers SE5 Forum, Camberwell Society and Camberwell Arts said that the owners of the Piano Factory building have given permission for the artwork.
The mural is part of a larger project by the community groups to develop a “community identity” for Camberwell, which they feel can be overshadowed by neighbouring Peckham and Brixton.
Last week the groups organised a butterfly mural on Butterfly Walk, paid for by the shopping centre owners MJW.
The groups are also in talks to have murals painted in Wyndham Road and by the new entrance to the Denmark Hill railway station.
Other plans to foster community in Camberwell include banners on the main roads through the area and a travel guide, SE5 Forum member Marie Staunton told the News.
“We want to make everyone feel at home in the area,” she added. “Camberwell is a very diverse part of London and we should be proud of that.”
Feel at home in the area …well do something about all the assaults on women in the area
