SHAUN Williams feels it’s only a matter of time before Jayson Molumby is called up to the senior Ireland squad – and is surprised it hasn’t already happened.
Mick McCarthy named Aiden O’Brien in a 39-man provisional squad for the friendly against New Zealand and the crucial Euro 2020 qualifier against Denmark, before O’Brien was left out of the pared-down group.
Molumby, 20, is the captain of Stephen Kenny’s Ireland under-21s. Kenny will take over from McCarthy either after the qualification campaign or, if they get there, the tournament next year.
Molumby has started all three of Gary Rowett’s games in charge, impressing with his ability on the ball and his aggression.
Williams, 33, is a bit admirer of his young team-mate.
“He’s fantastic and I’m surprised he hasn’t been included in the Irish squad. I’m sure it won’t be too far away,” Williams said.
“He’s done really well, he plays with no fear. He’s a good lad, he’s always willing to listen and learn and any pointers he’s given will help him to progress.
“He’s bubbly and funny and gets on with everyone, like everyone else here. He’s a good character.
“I can say that knowing him for the last couple of months that he’s not the type of personality to get carried away. He’s a willing listener and always wants to learn.
“Anytime he asks me anything or anything I can tell him I do. Hopefully it will help him.”
