SHAUN Williams earned his first senior Republic of Ireland cap on Monday night.
Williams, 31, came on in the 80th minute at Stade de France with Martin O’Neill’s side 2-0 down to the hosts in their international friendly.
The Lions midfielder almost grabbed a consolation goal in added-time, but France goalkeeper Steve Mandanda saved his effort, Ireland’s only shot on target in the game.
Olivier Giroud and Nabil Fekir scored in the five minutes before half-time. The difference in player resources between the countries was illustrated as France were able to bring on Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba in the second half.
Williams had made his first appearance for his country in Scott Brown’s testimonial last week, but that was a non-cap game.
France are preparing for the World Cup in Russia, while Ireland have one more summer friendly, against USA on Saturday.
