Students at London South Bank University doing energy-specific courses have opened a free advice centre, where residents can get money-saving tips and advice on how to cope with rising energy bills.
London South Bank University (LSBU) has opened an advice centre where Southwark and Lambeth residents can find out how to get support with their energy bills, whilst learning about energy efficiency.
An LSBU spokesperson said: “Right now, everyone is being faced with increased energy bills. And although it’s hard to navigate, there is some help out there.
“So we’ve opened this advice centre to make sure people in Southwark and Lambeth don’t miss out on the support available.”
The students giving the advice are all doing various energy-specific degrees, Master’s or PhD courses.
“The research they’re doing is on energy efficiency, how people can save money on energy whilst keeping their homes properly insulated and energy consumption.”
They are there to offer practical help such as how to access different funds, as well as additional support from the council, GLA, central government, and private companies.
Southwark Review of the Year 2022: How locals responded to the cost-of-living crisis
This isn’t the first time LSBU have done something like this. “A few years ago, we opened a legal advice centre, to offer locals free legal advice – something that is usually expensive and not accessible to all.
“The service is delivered by students and overseen by staff, to ensure it is professional. We found it worked well.”
So how can locals get advice?
The LSBU Energy Advice Centre is open for face-to-face advice from 10 am to 1 pm every Thursday.
Alternatively, they can contact them to get advice over email. For more information go to their website.

The project is being supported by UPP Foundation.
Graeme Maidment, LSBU Professor of Heating and Cooling, said, “We are determined to use the huge expertise at LSBU on cutting energy costs to help people save money on their energy bills by opening our brand-new Energy Advice Centre.
Rising energy bills and the cost-of-living crisis are hitting people in the pocket and we hope to reach thousands of people through the advice and information on our website, email and face-to-face services.
“LSBU’s new Energy Advice Centre is the place to come and get advice and information on cutting your home energy costs and getting help with your heating bills.”
The centre is at LSBU Energy Advice Centre, Clarence Centre for Enterprise & Innovation, 126 London Rd, SE1 0AE.
