NEIL Harris admitted Millwall are “a massive underdog” against Aston Villa this weekend – but is adamant they can get their first away win this season at Villa Park.
The Lions were in confident form at their training base on Calmont Road this week after beating Sheffield United last weekend.
Harris said the squad “can’t wait” to face Villa as Millwall travel to a ground they last played a league game at in the old Division One in April 1990.
Their last meeting with the Midlands side was in 2013 when John Marquis scored a late winner in the fourth round of the FA Cup at The Den.
Harris feels Millwall’s away performances have been very encouraging, and highlighted the number of fans who have travelled to games this season. Millwall sold out their full allocation of just over 2,000 for this weekend’s clash.
“It’s the same challenge we’ve had in a lot of games this year,” Harris said. “It’s a great one, going to Villa Park. It’s a great place to play football and I’m really looking forward to being the manager of a team at Villa Park.
“If you isolate our performances on the road this season we’ve drawn five, lost five. Straight off the top of my head, we had Forest away and we could have beaten them 25-1. We should have won the game at Brentford, missed a last-minute penalty and had a goal disallowed. Then Fulham away we took them apart in the second half. That should be three more points on board if not wins. Then there have been the draws we could have turned into wins.
“The performances on the road have been very good. We have to win away from home sooner or later, no doubt about that whatsoever. The fans keep turning up in their thousands because they can see how well we are playing, they’re enjoying away games.
“It’s got to happen and no better place than Saturday at Villa Park. Millwall are a massive underdog going there. Villa have got really good home results this year.
“We can’t wait for it. On the back of Saturday what an opportunity for my players to go and express themselves and play a game where there is nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
