AIDEN O’Brien has been called up to the provisional Republic of Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifying play-off fixtures next month.
O’Brien could be involved with Martin O’Neill’s squad for their meeting with Denmark on November 11 and the return leg in Dublin three days later.
O’Brien travelled to Dublin and then Cardiff for games against Moldova and Wales earlier this month as Ireland clinched a play-off place and the chance to reach the finals in Russia next year.
“I didn’t get the chance to play but it was a good experience to see how it works in the international set-up,” O’Brien said.
“I believe it’ll be fate when it happens, everything that is going to happen will happen for a reason. When my chance does come I have to take it.”
During his last involvement O’Brien met O’Neill’s assistant Roy Keane, and he was left with a positive impression of the former Ireland captain.
“Roy Keane is a really nice man,” O’Brien said. “He came over and we had a laugh together, there was a bit of banter flying about.
“We did some two-touch with him on the training ground. From the players to the management to the staff they were all really welcoming and really nice.
“The first game against Denmark is away, and I think it’ll suit having the second one at home. If we need a goal we can push for a goal or if we need to hold out it’ll be better to do it at our own ground. Hopefully we can get the result.”
