MILLWALL missed a host of chances as they were held to a scoreless draw by League Two Stevenage on Tuesday night.
Fred Onyedinma hit the woodwork and Stevenage goalkeeper Joe Fryer produced one brilliant save as Millwall failed to score for the second successive game.
The Lions made a bright start, with Jed Wallace firing a free-kick just wide before Aiden O’Brien forced Fryer into an early save.
Former Millwall defender Joe Martin headed straight at Tom King, who in a busy five-minute period also saved from Harry Beautyman and Dale Gorman.
The Lions were off-target with another free-kick five minutes before the break when George Saville curled an effort wide after Onyedinma had been brought down.
Millwall were on top, and in the 43rd minute wasted an opportunity when Tom Elliott tried to find strike partner Onyedinma but the pass was cut out.
The away side were inches away from going in front in first-half added-time, but Fryer was fortunate to see the ball rebound to him off the post from Onyedinma’s effort.
Shane Ferguson came on at the break for Millwall, with Tony Craig moving to the centre of defence, and from the Northern Ireland international’s cross in the 53rd minute Elliott couldn’t direct his header far enough away from Fryer, who tipped the ball over the bar.
Ben Thompson and Danny Newton both saw yellow for a clash in midfield in the 56th minute. Newton was withdrawn three minutes later just before Fraser Franks became the third player to go in the book for a foul on the closely watched Onyedinma.
Millwall were turning the screw and Fryer had to produce a superb save to keep out Wallace’s deflected shot, before Elliott headed the former Wolves’ winger’s corner just wide.
Neil Harris brought on Calum Butcher in an attempt to give Milwall more of a goal threat from midfield, but moments later it was King who had to make a rare save when he stopped Alex Samuel’s low shot.
Wallace, who had been Millwall’s best player in the second half, tried to inject some pace into his side’s attack and after a surging run he saw his shot deflected wide before being replaced with David Worrall.
There was some controversy with 10 minutes left when Mahlon Romeo went down in the box, but it was deemed simulation and he was harshly booked.
And Millwall couldn’t break down their hosts on a frustrating night at the Lamex Stadium.
