JAYSON Molumby felt he was denied a stonewall penalty as Millwall earned a point at home to Bristol City on Saturday – but he refused to criticise referee Andy Davies.
Molumby thought he was fouled by Adam Nagy in the 89th minute, but Davies failed to award a penalty. Bristol City manager Lee Johnson later admitted it could have been a spot-kick.
It was potentially the difference after Millwall dominated the second half and arguably deserved to win the game.
Molumby said: “I was on a yellow card so I needed to watch the way I approached it, but I was absolutely adamant that it was a penalty for me.
“I know what I felt, I know the contact was on me.”
Molumby tried not to be too harsh on the referee, saying that, “we all have bad days in football, we are all normal people at the end of the day.”
It was one of two apparent fouls on Molumby not given. Little from the referee seemed to go in favour of the Ireland under-21 international.
Molumby emphasised that “anyone who watches Millwall knows that I don’t go down easily for no reason”.
Millwall are just five points off the top six ahead of next Friday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.
Molumby feels his side are still in with a realistic chance of finishing in the play-off places. “It’s still all to play for and we need to keep picking up points. Anything can happen in football so I don’t see why not, but we are not getting ahead of ourselves. Wigan have gone on a crazy run now out of the relegation zone so anything can happen. We just need to stay in and around it.
“We’re happy with where we are at the minute but we need to keep going and you never know what can happen.”
Molumby, 20, who is in his first full season as a senior professional, had a target of 25 appearances for Millwall this campaign.
He has already made 32 in all competitions and has become popular with Millwall fans.
He said: “I’ve been delighted with how much football I’ve played. The boys have been excellent with me. Twenty five was my target when I came in, which was realistic. I’m happy about how much I’ve played.
“It’s all new for me. My body is maybe a bit more tired but the fans, especially in the second half, helped us get across the line. The boys are experienced and they help you in training. The medical team looks after you so I’d rather be tired than not playing.”
Away from The Den, the youngster has ambitions of featuring in Euro 2020, despite not having a senior cap to his name. He believes the regular game time at club level “will help my case. I just need to focus on playing but that is what I will be aiming for.” Molumby wants to “aim high in football and it is something I want to do. There are some big games coming up.”
