MILLWALL boss Gary Rowett revealed Connor Mahoney is working hard on the defensive side of his game to try to force his way into the Lions’ starting XI on a regular basis.
Mahoney, 23, has only started 13 of Millwall’s 36 league games this season since joining from AFC Bournemouth for £1million last summer.
But he showed his ability on Saturday when his whipped corner led to Tomas Kalas putting through his own net for the Lions’ equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Bristol.
Rowett spoke earlier this season how Mahoney needs to step up his effort out of possession.
“Again, Connor’s got so much ability, that’s why I played him, I felt we needed someone to unlock the door,” Rowett said.
“Connor’s challenge in every game is the same. He’s not a typical Millwall type of player, he maybe has to jut work harder defensively to win balls back to then get himself into those areas.
“When he gets into the final third he’s got undoubted quality. You saw that [Saturday] at times. I’ve spoken to him about it’s the defensive side of it that will get him into the team.
“You’ve got to be able to trust every player. That’s something that he’s working hard to do.”
