AIDEN O’Brien insists Millwall won’t get carried away with their recent good form – but he says they are determined to be in the top six by January.
The Irish striker scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season at Bramall Lane on Saturday to move Millwall to within three points of the promotion places.
The Lions could move level on points with Sheffield United in sixth if they win their game in hand against Doncaster this evening at The Den.
Millwall have lost just two of their last 11 games in all competitions and take a four-match unbeaten run into tonight’s fixture against a Doncaster side that lost 4-0 to Peterborough at the weekend, a result that keeps them in the bottom four.
O’Brien also revealed that, with so many injuries against their high-flying opponents last weekend, the victory exceeded pre-match expectations.
“It’s a massive win, we couldn’t have written it before the game,” O’Brien said. “We came here and just wanted to do our best to stay in the game, we didn’t expect anything too much. We just wanted to be contending for it and maybe just try and nick a win.
“We did so well to come here and get a 2-1 win. It’s massive for us. We should have won the game at Blackpool, but they got a late penalty.
“We’ve just got to keep going. The manager and coaching staff who are behind us keep saying, ‘Believe in yourselves, be a team, get things tight and compact and we know we’ll score goals at the other end.’
“We’ve just got to keep cleaning it up as well at the back and we’ll be alright.
“We started the season shakily as everyone knows, we didn’t have the best of starts. But that’s all behind us. When you look at us we’re flying, we haven’t been losing too much. I don’t want to jinx it but we’re getting points everywhere we go. It’s a positive, but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves here. We want to stay level-headed and see where it takes us.
“We want to look at where we are in January. We definitely want to be in the top half – we want to be in the play-offs, really, by January.
We’re good enough. We showed it (Saturday) that we’ve got a good enough team front and back, we’ve got everything really, we’ve just got to put it into play.”
O’Brien, who turned 22 on October 4, is currently Millwall’s top scorer this season and has set himself a personal milestone to hit before the end of the year.
He said: “This is a massive achievement for me in my first full season in the professional game. It’s just unbelievable, I can’t really out it into words.
“I just want to keep going now and see what I can reach before Christmas. I want hit double figures before Christmas.”
