Police recovered a BB gun at the place where a man was shot by armed officers in Deptford last week, the watchdog has said.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said that a “BB calibre airsoft pistol” was found at the scene on Creek Road after the shooting on Friday (August 5).
Armed officers rushed to the scene after getting reports of a man with a gun that afternoon at about 2.30pm.
Police tased the man, 36, before one officer shot him in the abdomen. He was airlifted to hospital. The IOPC said his injuries were not life-threatening.
Regional director for London at the IOPC Sal Naseem, said that the gun had undergone ballistics testing.
He said: “The discharge of police firearms are rare but when this occurs it is important a thorough and independent investigation takes place. We are working to establish all the circumstances surrounding the sequence of events which led to this man sustaining his injuries.
“Our investigation is still in its very early stages.”
Officers said they would gather and analyse evidence like body worn video, CCTV and eye witness accounts, as well as the initial accounts of the police officers at the scene.
