Police have released new details on an incident that resulted in shots fired and the death of two men in their twenties on Sunday evening.
Officers were called to Railton Road between Brixton and Herne Hill at 7.50pm following reports of gunshots yesterday (October, 30) and found two injured men who were later pronounced dead at the scene.
Police now believe two cars had been driving in the Railton Road area when one collided with a moped, killing the driver.
They say a man from the car involved in the collision left the vehicle and was chased by a male from the second vehicle.
The male from the second vehicle, armed with a firearm, is said to have shot him before returning to his car and fleeing the scene.
A homicide investigation is underway and numerous roads in the area remain closed off. Officers are still working to formally identify the victims and inform their next of kin.
There have no arrests and enquiries continue.
Witnesses have said about a dozen shots were fired and white forensic tents have been put up along Railton Road as teams investigate, where debris can be seen strewn across the road.
Two crashed vehicles can be seen at the crime scene – a silver car which has lost one of its tyres and a moped.
A single-decker 322 bus is also within the police cordon.
Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove of the Central South Command Unit, responsible for policing Lambeth and Southwark, said: “I am shocked and saddened by this incident. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the two young men who have tragically lost their lives. This incident will cause a great deal of concern throughout the local community and across London.
