Children at a Rotherhithe nursery have done their bit to honouring fallen soldiers, including making poppy biscuits and wreaths from their handprints.
Ahead of Remembrance Day – or Armistice Day (today November 11), under fives at Little Me Day Nursery have dedicated a whole week to commemorating those who lost their lives during the world wars.
Their celebrations included making a big ‘Nursery Poppy’ wreath from their handprints and icing poppy biscuits. They also visited the poppy stand in Surrey Quays to donate and get their own poppy.
On Friday (November 10) they visited the memorial in Bermondsey to lay their wreath at the cenotaph amongst all the others.
Georgie Sparkes, General Manager at the nursery said they were mesmerised by the amount of poppies they saw and were asking questions.
But, she added: “The children found it hard not to eat the biscuits when they were icing them.”
Remembrance Day – or Armistice Day – marks the actual day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918. This year that falls on a Saturday.
