Most of a three-roomed flat on the second floor of the three storey semi-detached house was damaged by fire.
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Forest Hill, Lewisham, Lee Green and New Cross fire stations extinguished the blaze.
The fire has prompted London Fire Brigade to share smoking safety tips. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.
“If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy properties but also cost you your life.”
A spokesperson also said: “The Brigade received five calls about the fire. The Brigade was called at 0018 and the fire was under control by 0129. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Forest Hill, Lewisham, Lee Green and New Cross fire stations attended the scene.”
