The launch party for a new branch of the Royal British Legion at a Bermondsey pub went off in style last weekend.
The party, which took place at the Ancient Foresters on Southwark Park Road on Saturday night (July 17), had food, drink and old war songs. Some people got up and danced, while others who are less mobile joined in by waving their arms or swaying along to the music.
Sandra Smith, who runs the pub, said: “It was really good, we had a lot of phone calls the next day saying how nice it was. We had a compere, we had music on looking back to the war, there was dancing, and just a great atmosphere. I’ve had people asking me when we are doing it again.”
As well as similar events every few months at the pub, Sandra wants to do a charity haircut with all the proceeds to go to the British Legion. She also plans to hold a special event commemorating the people who went through wars, which will be the night before Remembrance Day on November 11 this year.
The party on Saturday was also an opportunity for people to learn about the Royal British Legion and sign up. Nearly twenty people expressed a firm interest in joining, Sandra said..
