The Met has written to residents and businesses due to be affected by road closures during the funeral of PC Keith Palmer, killed in the March 22 terror attack in Westminster.
The funeral for 48-year-old PC Palmer will be held on Monday (April 10) at Southwark Cathedral from 2pm.
In a letter to local residents, the Met said: “At the request of Keith’s family, and in line with the proud traditions of the Met Police, this will be a Full Service Funeral with the officer’s family, close friends and colleagues in attendance. Officers are expected to line the streets around the cathedral and will take part in the service as ushers.”
Closures are being finalised, but they are likely to affect roads between London Bridge and the Borough High Street junctions with Marshalsea Road and Great Dover Street; as well as Southwark Bridge Road between the bridge and Marshalsea Road.
London Bridge Station will remain open, but vehicles will not be able to access the ring-road and taxi rank, and bus routes will be diverted between 11am and 4pm. St Thomas Street will be shut, as will Tooley Street for traffic heading to London Bridge Station.
Businesses expecting deliveries on the day should arrange for them to arrive before 6am, or after 4pm.
All vehicles should be relocated away from the following road before 6am: Borough Market footprint; Borough High Street between London Bridge and Talbot Yard; Bedale Street; Clink Street; Kings Head Yard; London Bridge (south); Montague Close including the residents car park behind the cathedral; Park Street, from Redcross Way to Stoney Street; Stoney Street; Southwark Street east of Southwark Bridge; St Thomas Street from Borough High Street – 100 metres east.
Protective security will be deployed as a precautionary measure and there will be an increased police presence on April 9 and 10.
It is requested that formal identification be carried by anyone expecting to be in the area from 6am on the day.
Queries can be made to local Inspector James Cole (james.cole@met.pnn.police.uk).
