Congratulations to The Mayflower pub for becoming the latest winner of the Southwark Heritage Association Blue Plaque.
The News has been working with the Heritage Association for fourteen years to get the borough’s rich history remembered.
There have been some noteworthy winners in the past, including actor Michael Caine and engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and there were some deserving nominees this year. The historic Southwark Charities ran a close race.
The Mayflower is more than worthy of a plaque. It stands as a reminder of Rotherhithe’s connection to the New World – America. This connection will be celebrated in 2020, the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower ship. Thousands of votes were cast. It’s great to see so many people proud of their borough’s history.
