MILLWALL boss Gary Rowett thinks Billy Mitchell’s will excel as a midfielder in the Lions’ team.
Mitchell, 19, has played at right-back and right wing-back since the Championship restarted but classes himself as a midfielder.
Jayson Molumby will return to Brighton after the end of this season and the Ireland under-21 captain hopes to challenge for a place in their side next season, making a Millwall return unlikely.
That could leave a space for Mitchell to challenge for a first-team spot next term.
“I certainly wouldn’t pigeon-hole him as a right wing-back,” Rowett said. “I think he’s a midfielder and he’ll be a very good midfielder.
“Because he’s got very good energy the wing-back role gives him a good outlet for that and gives us a consistent look to that right-hand side in terms of that energy.
“I don’t think long term we’d necessarily play him there but at the same time he’s shown he can play in another position, which gives him two chances to get in the team.
“For any young player you can’t see that as a negative, you’ve got to see it as a positive at that stage. You’ve got to just go and try to be the best player wherever you play.”
