JOE Edwards enjoyed George Saville’s spectacular goal against Sheffield Wednesday and reflected on the team’s attacking shape in the build up to the effort.
Brooke Norton-Cuffy, who would later score an impressive goal of his own, saw his cross headed away to the edge of the box.
Saville then burst onto the scene to lash home his second goal of the season, a wonderful volley that bent away from Owls keeper Cameron Dawson.
Edwards joked he was impressed with Saville’s “shinpad” effort having known the midfielder since he was a youth player at Chelsea.
The Lions head coach said: “I’ve known Sav a long time, since he was a young kid. I’ve not seen him score many with his shinpad from the edge of the box and to be honest the position he arrived in for that goal, any focus this week or talk with Sav before the game has not been about really being more offensive or being higher up the pitch from an attacking sense but we are trying to be more aggressive when we are attacking.
“I think what I liked about that most is if you look behind Sav, our central defenders are not that far behind him so we’ve got nearly our whole team in the final third and that’s something that’s going to be important about what we do. Because you get the moments like that where the player produces the good [moment] and Sav finds the net but, if it doesn’t, we’ve then got our whole team to close in and try and sustain that pressure and that’s what we want to be about.”
Saville had previously scored away at Plymouth Argyle this season, another impressive effort that sealed the points for Millwall late in the game.
Yesterday marked his third start on the bounce for Millwall having gone eight games starting on the bench.
